Tout est parti, en 2008, de l’idée de proposer un événement ancré dans son territoire – un territoire singulier, point de rencontre entre l’histoire et l’avenir, où la rouille, les briques et l’acier contrastent à merveille avec le béton et le verre d’une architecture moderne en pleine opulence.
Pour la 8 ème édition, désormais chaque mi-novembre, le festival Sonic Visions (Esch/Belval) prend possession des hauts fourneaux du quartier de Belval et de la salle de concert aux lignes cubiques : Rockhal. Faisant de cette cathédrale post-industrielle sa philosophie, le festival offre à son auditoire le panorama parfait pour poser un regard sur la création musicale d’aujourd’hui et de demain.
Sonic Visions s’adresse aux festivaliers du Luxembourg et d’ailleurs, façonnant une programmation dont les découvertes musicales et les expériences scéniques en sont les fondations.
Dans un esprit de fête et de célébration, Sonic Visions est depuis quelques années un événement de référence : de Metronomy à The XX en passant par C2C, Benjamin Clémentine, Courtney Barnett, Sigur Rós, Ásgeir, Kwabs, Oscar and the Wolf, St Vincent, Fritz Kalkbrenner,… nombreux sont ceux ayant croisé la route du festival et qui désormais enchante celle de notre quotidien.
En novembre prochain, la Rockhal et ses environs se mettront donc une nouvelle fois en fête pour accueillir les artistes de son époque et plusieurs milliers de festivaliers avides de les découvrir.

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE (US): In conversation, it’s obvious that the members of Death Cab for Cutie genuinely enjoy making music with each other and being in a band together. Their only motivation is to create music they like – and to impress and satisfy each other.
ALABAMA SHAKE (US): With “Sound & Color”, Alabama Shakes prove that the response to their debut studio album “Boys & Girls” was no fluke. Expanding on the soulful blues-rock base that made their name, they defy predictable expectations and map an exciting, surprising, and innovative new direction.
AaRON (FR): Simon Buret (writer/composer/performer) and Olivier Coursier (composer/arranger) were destined to each other, and that is now a fact! In 2004, advised by a friend, Simon called on Olivier to give him some lyrics. That resulted in a first title, “Endless Song”, and collaboration. Aaron was born.
JOSE GONZALEZ (SWE): José’s newest work “Vestiges & Claws”, is a hushed and delicate solo set that forefronts the artist and guitarist’s compellingly intimate vocal style and intricate playing technique, recorded almost entirely by José and self-produced, mostly in his Gothenburg home.
FAKEAR (FR): After studying music for two years, Théo aka Fakear devoted himself to electronic music and win the musical springboard AÖC 2012 in Caen such as the Adami Deezer Talents Prize 2014. Fakear could be considered as the new French electro prodigy!
SON LUX (US): Founded by producer-composer Ryan Lott in 2007, Son Lux “works at the nexus of several rarely-overlapping Venn Diagrams” (Pitchfork). With their brand new record “Bones”, Son Lux have shared the album in it’s impressive entirety and have also confirmed extensive European tour plans for later this year.
CAT FISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN (UK) : Leading the charge as one of the countries most exciting new guitar bands, Catfish And The Bottlemen, released their epic debut album, “The Balcony” in September on Communion/Island Records. Produced by Jim Abiss (Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian) and written by charismatic front man Van McCann, the album is packed full of radio favourites, including “Kathleen”, “Cocoon”, “Fallout” and “Pacifier”.
NAMIKA (DE) : Namika – which translates as « the writer » – has her roots in the Moroccan coastal city of Nador and her native Frankfurt. She sees herself as somewhat of a cultural hybrid with zeitgeist. In her music she loves the silence as well as the loud bass, the sparkling nightlife and the stories of everyday life. Accurate and honest lyrics combine with a blend of alternative pop, hip-hop, urban beats and oriental sounds for a unique and refreshing mix.
Her debut album « Nador » has been released this summer under the umbrella of JIVE Germany. The first single ‘Lieblingsmensch’ has been all over the charts and after 3 months since release is still going very strong. The future looks very promising indeed for Namika.
TOBIAS JESSO JR (CA): Vancouver-born songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr. settled into his own style by singing his own material for his 70s-style singer/songwriter debut. Jesso’s newest work, written entirely by him and centered on his vocals and piano is the heartache-themed “Goon” was released in March of 2015.
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (LU): It must be said that since 2004, the Luxembourgish band has certainly not taken it easy (endless tours with over 500 concerts, supporting Russian Circles, Biffy Clyro,,…) with some highlights along the way such as their appearance at the SXSW in Austin, Texas or the Roskilde Festival in Denmark.
FLO MORRISSEY (UK): Morrissey left school at 17, abandoning A Levels in Music and French to pursue her songwriting career. “It was a big decision,” she admits. “But I’d always been set on not going to university because I knew that music was what I wanted to do.”
RAG N BONE MAN (UK): Loaded with refined influences, Rag ‘N’ Bone Man has been a prolific underground name for a couple of years now, honing a ferocious live reputation through guitar wielding solo performances, as the resident vocalist of rap’s Rum Committee.
ALGIERS (US): The debut LP by Algiers is haunted by promises of the past: the rapturous call and response of millenarian gospel, the bellowing urgency of 60s protest soul, the scene-searching intensity of DC hardcore and the smeared viscosity of post-punk and no wave. After all, as Marx once said: “The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living.” But rather than revel in a state of nostalgia, the band wields these burdened visions to charge headlong into the future.
JACK GARRAT (UK): Dubbed by some eminences of the musical world – the radio host Zane Lowe at the American producer Rick Rubin – the young Englishman Jack Garratt should logically reach the top of charts this year. Bearded, redhead playing on stage with a pad, a guitar and a keyboard at the same time . His music, called futur r’n’b is a mix between a boiling James Blake and aJeff Buckley lascivious and of course Chet Faker.

La conférence du Sonic Visions : informations, ressources et rencontres pour artistes-musiciens & professionnels de la musique.
Pour cette huitième édition, la conférence du Sonic Visions, cette fois-ci étalée sur 3 jours avec en ouverture une journée dédiée au métal, propose une fois de plus les outils et informations essentielles pour les artistes, groupes et professionnels de la musique, confirmés ou en herbe, désireux de développer leur projet et de récolter de nouvelles idées créatives pour l’avancement de leur parcours.
Comme chaque année des professionnels de la musique, venus de toute l’Europe et de la Grande-Région, auront ainsi l’occasion de se rencontrer et de découvrir les nouveaux enjeux de la musique en 2015. Citons en guise d’exemple, la présence de Michael Roe (Artist Manager & European Label Manager Sargent House, Richter Collective), Jesper Gadeberg (Musicstylist.com), Benji Rodgers (Founder & CEO Pledge Music), Jake Beaumont-Nesbitt (IMMF – Director of Policy Flow), Michael Bisping (Managing Director, A.S.S. Concerts) et de nombreux professionnels de la musique locaux et de la Grande-Région, notamment du réseau Multipistes.
En 2014, la conférence du Sonic Visions avait rassemblé près de 300 participants, musiciens et professionnels confondus.
Lors des nombreux ateliers et panels seront traités des sujets tels que la promotion et la distribution digitale sur le web, les flux de revenus alternatifs (notamment par rapport au streaming), le DIY (Do-it-yourself), le team building (de quel professionnel l’artiste a-t-il besoin à quel moment de sa carrière ?), les problématiques liées à la tournée, le fonctionnement des festivals et le management d’artiste.
A relever parmi les nouveautés des conférences de l’édition 2015, un focus sur la thématique de la publicité pour artistes-musiciens par le biais de la keynote du superviseur musical danois Jesper Gadeberg (Musicstylist.com) et le journalisme musical notamment au niveau des médias numériques. A cela se rajoute la série « Oberkorn, it’s a small town » (dont le nom est tiré d’une chanson instrumentale composée par Depeche Mode lors de leur passage dans cette même ville pour donner un concert au début des années 1980) proposant une série d’ateliers pratiques sur le booking en Grande-Région, les métiers de la musique ainsi que l’intermittence du spectacle et le statut de l’artiste indépendant au Luxembourg (proposé en collaboration avec le Ministère de la Culture).
Sans oublier la table ronde « The Artist Panel », véritable session mentoring publique lors de laquelle des artistes en voie de professionnalisation luxembourgeois discutent avec des professionnels de la musique sur les difficultés et problématiques rencontrées au fil de leur parcours musical.
L’édition 2015 refera également la part belle à la scène métal, notamment par une série de panels et de speed meeting 100% métal organisés en collaboration avec le collectif luxembourgeois Nöize Collective le 12 novembre.
